Lagoon Hospitals used to be the Care Delivery side of Hygeia Nigeria Ltd, which was split between Lagoon and Hygeia HMO in 2020. Hygeia began operating in 1986 at what has now become its flagship hospital, Lagoon Hospital Apapa, a multi-specialist tertiary facility in Lagos, Nigeria. Since then the company has expanded its business, providing a range of primary and tertiary healthcare services in four locations (over six facilities): Lagoon Apapa, Lagoon Ikeja (2), Lagoon Victoria Island (2) and Lagoon Ikoyi.
Lagoon hospitals became the first private hospital in the country to successfully perform an open-heart surgery. The surgery was performed by a team of resident Nigerian healthcare professionals. Lagoon hospitals in Apapa and Ikeja hospitals also became the first hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa to earn accreditation from Joint commission international (JCI), the global acclaimed and recognised agency certifying hospitals and healthcare organisations with world standards and best practice in healthcare delivery.
